Prince George and Princess Charlotte have a new younger sibling, as their mother, the Duchess of Cambridge, has now given birth to a baby boy. The name of the third child has not yet been announced (oddsmakers had Alice and Philip as the favorites prior to the arrival). The youngster is fifth in line to the throne, behind grandfather Prince Charles, father Prince William, 4-year-old brother George, and 2-year-old sister Charlotte. (With the birth of the child, Prince Harry is now bumped from fifth to sixth in line.)
The baby was born at 11:01 A.M. U.K. time, in the Lindo Wing of St. Mary's Hospital in London. He weighs 8 pounds, 7 ounces. (George weighed 8 pounds, 6 ounces when he was born; Charlotte was 8 pounds, 3 ounces.) According to the Palace the medical staff on hand included Dr. Guy Thorpe-Beeston, Dr. Sunit Godambe, the Queen's surgeon gynecologist, Alan Farthing, and the queen's physician and "head of the medical household" Professor Huw Thomas.
"The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news," the Palace said in a statement. And Prince William was present for the birth, according to the palace.
According to sources, Kate is hoping to leave the hospital as long as there are no complications. It hasn't been confirmed by Kensington Palace yet, but Kate left the same day she gave birth to Princess Charlotte. Her personal assistant and stylist, Natasha Archer, was seen at the hospital earlier in the day, possibly having taken the duchess her going-home outfit.
Kate went into labor in the middle of the night, according to sources. The couple had staff in place so that their other children's routine was unchanged. Charlotte is understood to be at home at Kensington Palace, while George is at school and will finish at 3 P.M. this afternoon. There is speculation that William will collect the children and take them to the hospital later Monday afternoon so that they can be the first to see their new baby brother.
As is tradition, the framed notice of the birth is on display on a ceremonial easel on the forecourt of Buckingham Palace. The framed bulletin was brought out of the Privy Purse Door and carried across the forecourt to be placed on the easel.
There had been speculation that Kate might consider a home birth for her third child, but as Vanity Fair reported in March, opted to return to the Lindo Wing: "The room is all booked, the team are ready and everyone is just waiting for the baby to come," a source said at the time. "They have had two very positive experiences at the Lindo Wing, so it's the No. 1 choice. She knows the team and she feels like she's in very safe hands."
Kate made her last official public appearance before her maternity leave on March 22, when she and William went to watch a wheelchair basketball game in Olympic Park. She also stepped out with William and most of the royal family for Easter services a few days later.
The birth comes less than a month before Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding, which takes place on May 19; Kate is expected to attend the wedding, to be held at St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle, though she won't have a formal role in the ceremony. It is unclear if the new, youngest member of the royal family, however, will be present for the festivities.
